The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Deut. 31:8
…I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you…Eph. 1:18
It is by grace that we are saved, not by our own efforts but by the grace that Jesus extends to us. Nothing we can do will make him love us less or more. His love is trustworthy, it is solid, it is not dependent on our human effort to be better, to achieve perfection, to attempt to get closer to Him. It is our great hope in the darkness of our existence.
It is this hope, this love that I rest in tonight. Tonight, in the aftermath of a horrific shooting spree in our neighborhood last night. At the grocery store. The Martin’s grocery store that is also “our” neighborhood Starbucks fix. Our community has been violated by evil and because evil has raised it’s ugly head, we must not rest on our laurels but instead we stand against evil, we will stand for the One who has conquered sin and death. Jesus prevails! Even in the darkness of death and despair, Jesus is with us. Even when our knees give way and we hit the ground in weakness, we will overcome and we will trust the word of God that even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death we will not be afraid because He is with us.
Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid”. John 14:27
Pray for the families of the victims. Pray for the family of the shooter. Pray for our police department.
We have a great hope. Take heart. God is with us.
