It’s Good ‪Friday morning‬ 2018. As I clear the fog in my head, my thoughts wander in wonderment to what the inner circle of His friends, Peter, James and John, must have thought as they woke up (if they slept at all) and remembered what happened the night before.
You know what I mean?

Last night it all became clear. An earthly kingdom wasn’t happening! So they did the only thing they knew to do. Run! Their hopes of freedom dashed, despair grabbed their hearts. This was nothing like they thought.

The fear, uncertainty, the loss…I imagine it to have been too much to bear.

I mean how would you not do the same thing?

Distance yourself, wash your hands, pull your hood up and shrink back in terror at the crumbling of everything you’ve staked your life on. That’s what I imagine they would have been feeling as they woke to find that the nightmare was real and they were the main characters.

Today, as I stand at a distance and watch powerful leaders, church and otherwise, stumble and their organizations falter, I hope that we aren’t part of the crowd that cheers and calls for a crucifixion. But, that as we wake to the promise of another day, we realize the way forward is the way that Peter, James and John discovered was truly the way of Jesus.

The band, The Brilliance has been on repeat all week and their song lyrics remind me that ALL IS NOT LOST but, that which we think is lost is justifiably lost in order for us to find what we didn’t know we needed. May we, with the first disciples, boldly step into the death and resurrection of our Savior, receiving grace and mercy in exchange for our fear and shame.  I pray for us all and especially for those in a season where retreating in shame and succumbing to fear is the greatest temptation.

All is not lost – may the seeds of peace be scattered – birthing trees whose shade gives us rest.

All is not lost
Is not lost
Mm-mm

All is not lost
Is not lost
Mm-mm

The pain
Of life
I know
It well
It knows
Me well
The road
To peace
I know
Is hell
I know
It well

All is not lost
Is not lost
Mm-mm

All is not lost
Is not lost
Mm-mm

May the seeds of peace be scattered
Birthing trees whose shade gives us rest
May the seeds of peace be scattered
Birthing trees whose shade gives us rest
May the seeds of peace be scattered
Birthing trees whose shade gives us rest
May the seeds of peace be scattered
Birthing trees whose shade gives us rest
